Greetings friends,
On behalf of the Oregon
Birding Trails Working Group, I want to take this opportunity to recognize
a handful of forward-thinking businesses that have contributed CASH
to the Oregon Cascades Birding Trail project.
PLEASE
SUPPORT THESE BUSINESSES! Without their direct financial
support, the project would still just be a gleam in our eyes.
WILD
BIRDS UNLIMITED OF BEND - WBU of Bend was our first "Hermit
Warbler Site Sponsor," contributing a pair of $400 binoculars for
our site nominations drawing as well as $600 cash. Owners Kevin and
Jen Lair are both wildlife biologists, a rarity among retail birding
shop owners. They carry a full complement of feeders, nest boxes,
optics, books and bird seed, as well as a wide array of home and garden
accessories for bird lovers. The store is located in the Forum Shopping
Center off Highway 20 on Bend's east side (near Costco & Wild
Oats Market, on the way to Malheur!).

CRYSTALWOOD
LODGE - Crystalwood Lodge recently became our first multiple
Site Sposnsor, contributing $2,000 cash to the project and gaining
them status as a portal site near the statuesque Mt. McLoughlin. Proprietors
Peggy and Liz purchased this gorgeous, pet-friendly B&B on Westside
Dr. at Upper Klamath Lake in fall 2001. On my first visit there, I
got out of the car and immediately heard both WHITE-HEADED and PILEATED
WOODPECKERS on the property, an experience that's hard to match anywhere
in Oregon. The lodge lies on 140 acres at the transition between mixed
conifer forest and marshland, with a private canoe launch leading
directly into Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge. Make Crystalwood
Lodge your base for exploring Crater Lake or the Klamath Basin.

HOOD
RIVER COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE - Hood River County gets
big kudos as the first region along the trail to really step up to
the plate. Their $4,500 cash contribution will ensure that plenty
of birding sites in Hood River County get selected for the trail,
helping local businesses receive additional exposure from visiting
birders. The Chamber office, located at the Hood River Convention
Center, will serve as a portal site in the shadow of Mt. Hood; visit
the chamber for all your business needs in Hood River County. A couple
of chamber member businesses that have been especially supportive
of our efforts include Brian's Pourhouse, an delicious spot for lunch
or dinner in downtown Hood River, and the Hood River Coffee Company,
providing fresh coffee beans roasted to order.

RADEKE
BREWING COMPANY - The F.D. Radeke Brewing Company made
our first committed contribution to the project with a Hermit Warbler
Site Sponsorship of $1,000 cash. But you won't find their beer in
any stores! The F.D. Radeke Brewing Company operated the River Brewery
until 1920 along the banks of the Kankakee River in Kankakee, Illinois.
This excerpt from the 1876 Kankakee City Directory hails the company's
productivity: "At the brewery owned by F.D. Radeke, no less than 10,000
bushels of barley are consumed yearly, and 4,000 barrels of beer manufactured."
The heir to the Brewery, Carol Anne Radeke, is an avid birder and
conservationist and wanted to help get the Cascades Birding Trail
off to a solid start.
IT'S
NOT TOO LATE TO SPONSOR THE OREGON CASCADES BIRDING TRAIL!
We are about 6 weeks away from going to print on our first brochure.
If you own or manage a business that would like exposure to thousands
of visiting birders, contact me directly for sponsorship opportunities.
More
to come soon,
